The photograph Yasmine First Time shows the French-Moroccan billiard player and muse Yasmine d’Ouezzan, who, for a while, has played a central role in Sadaâne Afif’s work. Starting in 2014 at the Marrakech Bienniale Afif offered to let a teacher give a geometry class every evening on the Jemaa el Fna square. During a visit to the Maison de la Photographie in Marrakech, Afif came across a portrait of Yasmine and took a snapshot of it. This fleeting moment, which became the starting point of a complete series of works, is captured in the small-format edition, which has the exact dimensions of the artist’s smartphone. While looking closely at the print you can even see the reflection of the artist in it. For the exhibition This is Ornamental at Kunsthalle Wien in 2018, the artist created a limited edition of 30 copies, showing the first encounter between the artist and the protagonist.
