Exhibition History
1991–2023

When an art museum is transformed into a fashion show, Sylvie Fleury is definitely the guest. For around 25 years, the artist has been ironically playing with gender clichés and stereotypes of consumer society. With “Shoplifters from Venus”, the Kunst Museum Winterthur is presenting a comprehensive solo exhibition by the Geneva-based artist for the first time in Switzerland in 15 years, in which she seeks a dialogue with modernism and reveals its male influence with relish. The forthcoming accompanying book is more than just an exhibition catalogue: It follows the development of the artist’s oeuvre based on all of her solo exhibitions since the 1990s. Essays by Simon Baier, Konrad Bitterli and Elisabeth Bronfen shed light on selected aspects of her work, which has lost none of its explosive content or emancipatory power over the years.
