By combining a jigsaw with a game of chess and draughts, which are each playable and thus make reference to Op Art and geometric abstraction, Mathieu Mercier once again demonstrates his practice of combining aesthetics and function. Mercier, who was awarded the Prix Marcel Duchamp, refers at the same time to the avant-garde artist himself and quotes his manifold works on the subject of chess. In the contrast between the regular black-and-white squares and the multiple grooves of the puzzle pieces, Mercier’s board game presents a seemingly unsolvable task. The work appeared in 2011 as a commission to the traditional German company Ravensburger and is limited to 1000 copies. The edition is already part of numerous institutional collections.
