Monochromes–based on an idea by Fredrik Værslev

MONOCHROMES–based on an idea by Fredrik Værslev marks the beginning of the gallery's collaboration with the Norwegian painter (*1979). Instead of a solo exhibition, the artist decided to gather ten other artists in a group show who were important for his artistic and personal development. In addition to icons of monochrome painting, such as Olivier Mosset, Værslev's professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main Michel Krebber, positions like Isa Genzken or John M Armleder are also present, which one would not initially associate with the subject of monochrome. Værslev circumvents these curatorial conventions by selecting individual works by the respective artists and placing them in his special exhibition scheme. For instance, the alphabetically arranged hanging is based on the founding exhibition of the BMPT group consisting of Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier, and Niele Toroni from 1967. As in the pioneering first Manifestations exhibition of the avant-gardists, where large banners with the artists' names were mounted on the walls, Værslev sets the rhythm on the basis of the artists' names, which are displayed in the form of oversized wall texts above the works. The curated group show will be followed by a solo exhibition of the artist's work at the gallery's Wilhelm Hallen location in the spring of 2024.
